HISTORY OF PENINSULA GUN CLUB

The Peninsula Gun Club was established on September 22nd, 1957. Through the efforts of dedicated board members and volunteers it has grown into a full service sportsman's club.

Established September 22. Very first meeting at Gibraltar High school to form a gun club. 13 total members. First rifle range was at the ski hill which is now Little Sweden Resort. Bay Ship donated the first steel to create the range backdrop. Affiliation with the National Rifle Association was established. First fundraiser was a Venison feed in December.

Approached Department of Army, Director of Civilian Marksmanship for 8 rifles. Received (4) .30 caliber M1 rifles and (4) Stevens .22 caliber rifles. Also received (8) slings. First organized rifle shoot was October. First Poultry shoot (live birds) was also in October. Ammo for .30 caliber was .03 cents per round.

Moved rifle range to north end of Gibraltar High School property. Started proceeds for incorporation. Started looking for land to build a trap range.

Reaffiliated with the NRA for $10. Selling .30 calliber ammo for .50 cents/box. Held live poultry shoot in October and live turkey shoot in November.

Started subscription of NRA magazine for Gibraltar High School Library. Held turkey shoot and raffle of 30/30 carbine. Still looking for land for trap field.

Venison feed fundraiser at C&C Supper Club in Fish Creek. Held Turkey shoot. Held shotgun raffle. Put together building construction ideas.

Held venison feed fundraiser. Held fish boil fundraiser at Fish Creek town hall on Memorial Weekend. Had a Winchester Mod. 59 shotgun raffle. Construction starts on clubhouse on Juddville Road.

Held turkey shoot. Held deer hunting sight in day. PGC up to 38 members. Started chimney construction. Somebody stole the lawn mower.

Held turkey shoot at Gibraltar High School. Held fish boil. Two sharptailed grouse spotted on Cty. E

Started planning for indoor range. Raffle off Savage Mod. 110 .30/06 with scope. Tickets .50 cents. Suggestions to start bulldozing for trap field and outdoor rifle range. Greenwood Supper Club donates TV antenna and Cedar trees. Held turkey shoot. Bought 20 turkeys for .39 cents/lb. Held fish boil at new clubhouse.

Held venison stew fundraiser and made net profit of $64.62. Memberships up to 51.  Watched 2 motion pictures from Winchester on trap shooting. Construction on indoor firing range begins. Held fish boil fundraiser at fire station in Fish Creek. Received $1,000 from Wisconsin Conservation Department for range construction. Held a "Swap-Sell-Buy" fundraiser at PGC.

Held 1st annual PGC dinner at Greenwood Supper Club for $4.50 including tip. Army starts clearing land for outdoor range and trap field. Organizing 1st summer trap season. More "trap boys" needed. Held fishboil fundraiser with raffles of Savage Mod. 30 and Ruger 10/22 and 7x35 binoculars. Fish Creek Woman's Club hold bake sale to organize a "Junior Division". 1st Life Membership offered for $75. Held the 1st Door County "Open". Entry fee of $1.00, 12gauge shells $2.25. Must have own .22 shells for competition. Department of Army accepts "Junior Division" statistical report. 1st color TV donated. Membership up to 70. Held first mailing of raffle tickets.

Work continues on indoor range. Annual dinner held at Clayton's Supper Club in Ellison Bay for $4.25 including tip. PGC purchases 10,000 rounds of .22 cal. ammo from the Dept. of the Army, Dept. of Civilian Marksmanship. Held 2nd annual Door County "Open". Color TV antenna w/rotor installed to watch Packer Games.

Held Open Shoot fundraiser. Total income of $162.50. Membership up to 81. Discussion on whether to install toilet in clubhouse. Assemblyman Larry Swoboda to come and discuss anti-gun legislation by Democrats at state level. 

​

Fall PGC Dinner held to Murphy Moores.

​

Held turkey shoot. Discussion on funds available from Door County for the range but must turn over all property to county for life. Discussion on a target retrieval system. Received check from UW extension office for $575 for range work. Held 1st 12 week trap season. 

​

Finished work on indoor range. Continued discussion on "indoor" toilet. 

​

Started reloading shells for trap season. $2.50 per box with a $1.00 deposit. New shells to sell for $3.25 per box. Held brat fry on 4th of July in Fish Creek. Net loss of $4.06. Trap shooting to cost $1.50 per round.

Annual dinner held at Carlsville Bar for $4.00 per plate including tip.

Discussions on building a new clubhouse. Set up stand to sell brats and beer in Baileys Harbor for the 4th of July. Discussion on opening clubhouse on Monday nights.
